Information supply as a major concern

Effective search and information access are basic needs of researchers.

The provisioning of this information was in the past nearly restricted to the libraries.  With the raising of new technologies a fundamental change has started and is evolving again.

Today we have many distributed resources and the number of them is increasing. An effective search, automatic combination, personalization – in the end a semantic search based on understanding of context and intent will improve information search considerably.

Googles Knowledge Graph will be based on relations between things and is probably just one step forward on the long way to better machine-human interaction. Especially for business use there exist already enterprise solutions, some are developed by companies themselves like Walmart or are under construction like quantinum. But to optimize search is not enough. 
Make information useful for research, make it available and sensible is the point.

That’s one of the goals of the new European project EEXCESS “Enhancing Europe’s eXchange in Cultural Educational and Scientific Resources”.  It demonstrates in what directions the future solutions will go: away from pull to push services, towards Open Educational Resources (OER) and using social media as valuable sources. That open access is one of the key components of comprehensive information supply emphasises also a study from 2011 “Access to Scientific Publications: The Scientist’s Perspective”.

With research the stock of knowledge increases, but only if researchers are not reluctant to put some effort in making their results useful and available – also outside of commercial journals, closed platforms or sources that are extensive to explore – it will be a precious contribution in the long run.

How information supply can be improved is a question that probably every university ask itself regularly. Görl, Puhl & Thaller (2011) have investgated institutional and interinstitutional measures and propose common technical infrastructures and joint provisioning as measures for a more effective and efficient information supply that can survive beside the global “information players” like Google.
 As mentioned in “Strategie zur Informationsversorgung und zum Einsatz von Informationstechnologie an der Universität Basel” (2012) , to hold up research and teaching on a competitive level a university needs an effective information supply using the instruments of a modern information and communication technology. To provide it will be an important task in the upcoming years.
